In fact, "Desert Storm" originally invaded retail last fall on the PlayStation 2 and XBox, where it was met with so-so reviews and average consumer response. He's quick to point out that "Desert Storm" was never intended to cash in on the fighting it was put into production long before Iraq was officially included in President Bush's new "axis of evil" in early 2002. "It's really an unfortunate situation," says Leece, referring to the eerie timing. This week, Gotham launches the GameCube version of the war game, and Leece is not exactly enthusiastic about the free advertising his game is receiving on cable news networks. He's referring to the sight of tanks rumbling down Baghdad's main thoroughfares, Bradley assault vehicles pulling up to government buildings and Marines streaming out the back, and statues of Saddam Hussein brought down in front of cheering crowds.Īnd the art of which Leece speaks? "Conflict: Desert Storm" (PS2/XBox, $49.99), Gotham's military sim based on the 1991 Persian Gulf war.
